IOT PRIVACY SCANNER / THESIS INTERNSHIP
THESIS GOAL
Auxilium Cyber Security conducts extensive research activity as well as engage in commercial projects aiming to protect confidential and sensitive data in corporate environments as well as preserve privacy of individuals. The rise in popularity for the IoT devices is posing a risk to those areas. IoT devices constantly communicate with the internet and other devices in order to ensure their functionality. However majority of the times no one knows what data is being transmitted and where. So companies and individuals assume a third party risk.
Therefore the goal of the thesis internship is to build a hardware appliance which can be deployed in the controlled environment and detect IoT devices which leak private/sensitive/confidential or otherwise dangerous information which can be proven useful to the attacker. As a mean of collecting the data device will use Ethernet, Wi-Fi connectivity and any additional channels chosen by the student (e.g. RF, Bluetooth, ZigBee). As an alternative student can build a device which will detect vulnerabilities in the IoT devices in the controlled area and then rescan constantly in order to identify new vulnerabilities.
APPROXIMATE OUTLINE
Examine existing academic research into the topic of IoT privacy and sensitive information leakage, past incidents and any existing research in detecting these problems. Research existing hardware and software solutions that might be suitable for a given application. Auxilium would cover well-founded investments into hardware or software acquisition in case the tool is not yet available in-house. Build, deploy and test the appliance in the simulated environment. Measure the effectiveness of the appliance in detecting IoT devices which leak sensitive information.

Re-design or improve the honeypot based on collected data and feedback from other researchers inside our company. Sum up outcomes of your work as degree thesis.
